User storage on FA

Post by Vesa »

I haven't found info about how many patches (called Tones in FA?) one can store in User bank area, or externally on SD (USB too?)

I also read one can freely download any of 11 existing and install two of the former SRX expansions from Axial, does that download also include the patches? Where will the patches be stored?

So, can someone tell how many user (pcm and the other types too) patches, performances, drumkits, I can access right after boot when all user, downloads have been installed/saved :) ?

Thx

If you download the FA06-07-08 Sound List, it shows the various MSB LSB PC parameters for factory presets and users tones as well as Studio Sets.

If you install the SRX EXP from Axial (max 2 at the same time from the 11 available) the presets and PCM waves are saved in the expansion slots of the FA. But if you create a user sound that uses a PCM wave from in one of these expansions, it will be saved a user tone. If you try to recall a sound that uses a PCM wave from an EXP that is not install, it just won't generate the sound.

As for the number of user tones possible it varies based on the type of sound engine used to create the sound.

For SuperNatural Acoustic (total of 256) :
User 1-128 (MSB:89, LSB:0, PC:1-128)
User 129-256 (MSB:89, LSB:1, PC:1-128

For SuperNatural Synth (total of 512)
User 1-128 (MSB:95, LSB:0, PC:1-128)
User 129-256 (MSB:95, LSB:1, PC:1-128)
User 257-384 (MSB:95, LSB:2, PC:1-128)
User 385-512 (MSB:95, LSB:3, PC:1-128)

For SuperNatural Drums (total of 8)
User 1-8 (MSB:88, LSB:0, PC:1-8)

For PCM Synth (total of 256)
User 1-128 (MSB:87, LSB:0, PC:1-128)
User 129-256 (MSB:87, LSB:1, PC:1-128)

PCM Drums (total of 32)
User 1-32 (MSB:86, LSB:0, PC:1-32)

You can create a total of user 512 Studio Sets
1–128 INIT STUDIO 85 0 1–128
129–
256 INIT STUDIO 85 1 1–128
257–
384 INIT STUDIO 85 2 1–128
385–
512 INIT STUDIO 85 3 1–128

IMPORTANT if you download the sound banks from the INTEGRA 7 Axial site, these are installed in the user banks and may override existing sounds that you have in these locations so make sure to create a Backup of you FA before you install these banks if you don't want to lose those user sounds.

Finally the Songs you create are save on the SD card and while it says that you can have 100 songs, if you SD Card has enough capacity, you can put more. If have heard of people having 200 songs.

Hope this helps!
Cheers

Thanks for very useful post Tigus ! :)

So a Studio Set is the former "Performance" with 16 parts/tones, which can be chosen from SuperNatural Acoustic, SuperNatural Synth, SuperNatural Drums, PCM Synth and PCM Drums tones, you can use both sound generators at the same time, mix all types of tones?

ALL these tones make the USER area? I would always have these 1064 onboard?
256 SuperNatural Acoustic
512 SuperNatural Synth
008 SuperNatural Drums
256 PCM Synth
032 PCM Drums
------------------------
1064 tones

And 512 of those Studio Sets, damn, this must be the largest User Area in any gear ever!

Regards, Vesa

EDIT //

I think I read in the manual there are only 4 waveforms in one Patch's (Fantom FA Tone) 4 tones. MIDI implementation shows there are 2 waveforms for each "tone", so 2x4 = 8 waveforms, been like that since Roland XV. Roland JV/XP also had a 4 tones/Patch construct, but could only hold one waveform/tone = 4 waveforms / patch

JV/XP/XV/Fantom-S/X tone is not the same as FA Tone

So the way I understand it as as follows. I don't have the logistic on how much stays in the FA and how much goes to the SD card but I do know for sure that the songs, the backups and the samples for the pad are all saved on the SD card and the EXP are in a special memory in the FA.
A Studio Set is a combination of 16 parts/tones (similar to a Performance for other manufacturers) and in theory, they could all be played at once. However, you are still limited to the 128 voice polyphony (not counting the pads of which 4 can be played at once).
I'm not sure how many voices a SN tone actually uses but as you mentioned a PMC tone can consist of up to 4 wave forms. So I suspect that a 4 wave PCM tone would use up 4 times the polyphony of a 1 wave PCM tone. This being said, I have played on studio sets which cross layered 6 or 7 tones (some were 3 and 4 PCM tones) and never really had any polyphony issues. I know I have some people complain on this so it might depend on the actually tones and possibly how the studio set is set up. Also in the Studio Set you can set a limit on the voice reserve for each tone so for example you could decided to reserved 2-3 max for the base which would free up some voice capacity for other tones. I know if you mute a part it still uses the polyphony. You really need to click off the KB for the part if you want to save on the voices.

Regarding memory managent, one cool thing about the restore functions of the FA is that you can import tones or entire Studio Sets from different backups.
I have a backup setup for my Prog Rock band and a different one for more like to 40 stuff. If I want to incorporate a few songs from one into the other, I can just select the Studio Set or sound that I want. As long as it has the same EXP wave forms, you're good to go.

I also use the FA Windows Editor that was developed by one of the guys on this forum (just search Windows Editor). It's not expensive and it allows you to to organize your tones and Studio set when your not in front of the Keyboard which is really cool when preparing for gigs. The restore process is not very long (maybe 2-3 minutes), you can actually do it between sets if needs.
