This dream you speak of is not farfetched because I have always wanted a synth that would let me layer sounds with each other with out all of the hassle of copying effects and other things like that . I always wanted something like a pad machine where I can make lush and evolving pads full of atmosphere and spirit with out taking all night to do it .

From what I've been hearing so far this may be the dream synth for me that I've been waiting so long for because pads are very important for my sound .

I’m also a fan of art, poetry, science, philosophy and all things high-tech etc. But most of it is just aid to support my tremendous love for music, being a hardcore musician is one of the things I’m most proud of.

ok , let's compare (just looking at p12 of the JP80 users manual)

- JP80 (2011) : a tone consists of 3 partials
- Motif XS (2007) : a tone consists of 8 elements (= partials?) with each of them having a 2band EQ, +dual band filters (don’t think JP80 has these dualband filter’s as also in the vsynth . Why ???)

- JP80 (2011) : each tone has 1 MFX + reverb (chorus?)
- Motif XS (2007) : each tone has 2 MFX + reverb + delay (+master Eq and Compressor)

Also if you use the MOTIF XS in “studio = Song” mode , you’ll have 8(with 2 mFX each) + 8 tones available iso 4 in performance mode, …

You can't compare the incomparable. A tone in the Jupiter it's just not the same as a tone in the Motif.

But if you want to go through numbers...
The 8 partials on the Motif are used to make a Voice". The Jupiter equivalent to a "Voice" would be a "Live Set".
To make a Live Set you can use 4 Tones. Since each Tone can use 3 "partials" you can in fact be using 12 "partials", more then the Motif.

Anyway, like I said, it makes no sense to compare both keyboards.

btw, an element in the motif is in my understanding the same as a partial in the jupiter 80.

And for the rest , who cares ?

In the end the jupiter comes up with a registration which holds : 1 (solo) + 4 (upper) + 4 (lower) + 1 percussion part = 10parts (3 partials each maybe?)

the Motif in song mode (in which you can also play live) has 16 parts (8 elements each)

Also, this person named Dan explains that you can put 4 live sets in a registration - - according the manual you can only put 2 livesets + 2 tones ? mmm, who's right then

Instead of focussing on ease of use and logic of the setup approach and more importantly, the sound quality the discussion immediately shifted to an irrelevant discussion on number of simultaneous sources ..partial/tone/live set/registration (27) vs tone/patch/live set (32) vs element/voice/performance (32) and so completely misses the point, after all, 48 empty cans makes sounds and you don't have to plug it in....

It's a global EQ so you can adjust to the room or amp.

This capability has been paraded around since Dan made his video. What I'd really like is to see you try to set it all up on the Motif...this massive 16 part 8 layer sound. Setup your controllers, FX everything. See ya in a hour? How much button mashing and cursoring around is enough?

A Registration consists of four Parts: Solo, Upper, Lower, and Percussion. Upper and Lower use 4-tone Live Sets. Solo and Percussion are 1 Tone only. So you can make a 10 tone/30 "partials" sound.
There are 8 sets of registrations banks. Each set has 4 banks (A-D). Each bank has 8 registration locations.

[edit] Its a 10 Tone/ 30 "partials" and not 10 Tone/26 "partials" like I previously wrote. Sorry for the bad math ;-)

I don't know the Motif architecture. So I'm just looking at numbers.
Another reason why you can't compare it? So far, when I talked about partials I was refering to VA analog modelling on the Jupiter. You can't compare this to Motif sounds. More, If you select a SuperNatural Acoustic tone, there are no "partials". You get a "full" sound and how many "partials" , if any, you have there just don't count.

And for the rest , who cares ?
