New user needs guidance on setting up songs for gig

Post by AndyGee »

Just recently got a Roland Stage and have a few questions
about setting this up for live playing. Any help/advice will be appreciated:

1. From what I've gathered so far, the best starting point is to figure out what
patches you commonly use for many songs and assign those to favorites (like a
rock keyboard sound, strings, etc.). In addition, create performances and
assign those to favorites. But once you set all of these up, what is the best
way to ensure quick access them in a live setting? It seems like I might have
to have some reference sheet nearby telling me what's assigned to what
bank/location.

2. I see that the stage has 64 user performances available. This might sound
naive, but is that enough? I play in a band that does covers now, and we have
40 songs so far and are continuing to expand. I'm not saying I'll have a
performance for each song, but how do you handle it when you get beyond the 64 (if anyone has done that)?

3. Speaking of favorites - any way I can easily move a favorite from one
location to another? Any way to alphabetize a list of favorites?

4. What about switching sounds in the middle of a performance (for example, to
play a sax line)? I see I can either just select another favorite with the
desired sound assigned, or have the sound as part of my performance.
From what I've read, there is a slight delay if I switch patches via favorites. If it's a patch that's one of the 16 set up as a Performance, there is no lag but
switching doesn't seem that intuitive. Any advice here?

Right now just feeling a bit overwhelmed and wondering how soon I can get rid of the old keyboard (a Casio Privia) and use this full-time. Thanks for reading.

Have you backed up and/or loaded from a USB pen?

I have a pen for each band I gig with. Commonly used sounds are stored in bank 0. Other banks have the splits and stuff needed for songs that require it - I try to keep sounds adjacent to each other (for a song that can't be played using bank 0).

Bank 0 always has:

Electric piano (currently Wurli)
Electric Organ (with leslie on/off)
Horn section suitable for brass riffing
Strings suitable for single line counter melodies
Synth pad
Synth brass
Solo synth
Clav with filter

I use the piano button for acoustic piano.

So how are you using Performances, other than for splits? I'm having a hard time understanding how I should use them.

Hi Andy

No - just using performances for splits and layers.

Thanks for the feedback. I'd really like to know what Roland has in mind with Performances. I see 16 parts available but no easy or clear way to access or separate them in a live setting, unless you assign them to different zones. And even with that, in some cases I'll get sound when everything is supposedly off.

Hi All

It took me a while to figure out a useable live setup for the Stage. What I do now is setup a performance for a song. If I need a piano with layered strings I assign the S1 and S2 buttons above the pitch bend to bring in sounds when I want them. So I can have eg: a piano at all times then S1 will add some strings and S2 adds a Pad sound. If I need more than this then I just use the key range function and split the keyboard. I'm also now using a controller as a second keyboard that's midi'd to channels 9-16 on the Juno. So I can make use of all the midi channels. It takes a while to set a performance up but I now have everything to hand when I want it.

My controller is a JV-1000 as it has 8 faders to control midi channels 9-16

Hope this helps
