My dad said he wanted a piano, so naturally, I thought of the Roland RD-700. But then, there's the new Roland pianos out now, the RD-700GX and RD-300GX. Instead of getting a used RD-700SX, I was thinking of getting him a new RD-300GX instead (which claims to have some of the same pianos as its bigger brother, the RD-700GX), since they'll both end up being about the same price (used vs. new).
My question is, are the pianos in the new RD-700/300GX series pianos, the same pianos and sound engine as in the Fantom-G? Seems like it, especially since the RD-700GX employs the new SuperNatural EP sounds.

The RD-300GX is basically a RD-700SX with less features and a PHA alpha II keyboard (a lighter version of the PHA). No, the sound on the 300GX is not the one from the Fantom-G/RD-700GX. So, if you really apreciate weighted keyboards I'd say you better get an used 700SX since this has the full PHA keyboard mechanism.
The RD-700GX and the Fantom G share some waves but they do sound diferent maybe due to a diferent wave maping and the converters not beein the same AFAIK. The SuperNatural technology is used for the E.Pianos only not the Ac Piano but still they sound different.
In the end, if you can afford it, I would recommend the RD-700GX for the sound and the PHA "Ivory Feel" keyboard wich is truly awsome. If not, I would go for the used RD-700SX instead of the RD-300GX unless weight is a problem.
